Angioplasty or Heart bypass Surgery

Angioplasty or Heart Bypass Surgery, Which is Better?

ANGIOPLASTY OR HEART BYPASS SURGERY, WHICH IS A BETTER CHOICE?

Heart Bypass surgery and Angioplasty both are the medical treatments which are used to treat blocked arteries carrying blood in the body. Arteries are the blood vessels that distributes oxygen rich blood in the entire body, right from the brain to toes.
Over time, due to the formation of some substance called plaque in the inner walls of arteries, it gets blocked. Subsequently, blood flow to the body is reduced, and arteries gets blocked. And this can result as strokes or heart attacks.

WHAT IS ANGIOPLASTY?

Angioplasty is also known as balloon angioplasty. It is a procedure wherein a balloon-tipped catheter is guided to the blocked coronary artery through a long, thin tube. This balloon is then expanded to widen the narrowed artery and stent is placed in the clogged artery to reduce the risk of it getting narrowed and blocked again.

WHAT IS HEART BYPASS SURGERY?

In the process of Heart Bypass Surgery, a part of a healthy blood vessel is taken either from the individual’s leg, arms or chest and connect it above and below the blocked arteries in the heart to restore blood flow. As a result to this, the blood bypasses the blocked part of the blood vessel and flows to the heart.

WHY IS ANGIOPLASTY A BETTER CHOICE THAN HEART BYPASS SURGERY?

Angioplasty is less painful and cost effective treatment, if compared with heart bypass surgery. Hospital stay for Angioplasty is only for 1-2 days and most of the patents can go to work within a week, comparatively Bypass Surgery requires minimum a week of Hospitalization. For Angioplasty, cutting and opening of chest is not required and also very less blood loss take place. In Angioplasty under local anaesthesia, narrow catheter tube is inserted from any of the artery of hands, legs or waist which reaches up to the arteries of heart and then stent is deployed and catheter is pulled back. Whereas, everyone knows Heart bypass Surgery is an open heart surgery in which rib cage is cut and open for the procedure. Also in Angioplasty Local Anesthesia is given to the patient but in Heart Bypass Surgery it requires general anesthesia since it is an open heart surgery.

Compared to Angioplasty, Bypass surgery is very difficult, painful and costly procedure for the patient.

Bypass is a major surgery requiring cutting open the chest cavity under general anesthesia. Significant blood loss happens during the surgery and many times blood transfusion is needed. There are chances of many complication during and after the surgery from stroke to death. After the surgery, patient feels the pain for many day and full recovery can take up to 12 weeks. Hence, Angioplasty is a much better choice than Bypass surgery.
